Thermal Wire and Cable, LLC is fully operational, despite a direct hit by a Category 4 Hurricane Irma.
While our main operations and corporate office are located in Naples (Southwest Florida), we also have operations in Tulsa, OK, Nashville, TN and Houston, TX. Our Tulsa distribution center was overwhelmed with orders transferred from Naples before the storm.
Employees Forge Ahead during Hurricane
It is said that true character is best displayed when tested during a crisis. Hurricanes bring out that true character. Chris Gegenwarth, our Tulsa Operations Manager, operated at a level not expected from most managers. Despite no power in Naples, no internet for five days, and key employees on vacation, Chris persevered with shipping orders to clients without delay. While leaning on procedures in place for this type of crisis, Chris resorted to a thought process that can certainly be described as outside of the box.
Among other keen tricks he has learned over the years, Chris opted to send cell phone pictures of orders, packing slips and other information, which is typically done by email. Our order output actually increased during the storm! Chris is a good example of the demonstrating survivor skills, as he lived in Naples for 22 years. We thank Chris for his above-and-beyond team spirit!!
Our sales manager in Houston, Travis Turner, has continued to conduct operations despite the recent flooding and chaos of Hurricane Harvey. His courage is a yet another example of the tenacity of our employees.
Down But Not Out
While I was indoctrinated by Hurricane Andrew in 1992, I discovered Floridians’ resilience and willingness to endure these disasters with a spirit unique only to Florida. Thermal Wire was often the only company operational on Plover Avenue, Naples, through Hurricanes Charley, Wilma and Dennis. Our phones and emails were not affected due to measures we’ve learned to take over the last 20 years. My team will continue to follow Emergency Procedures in place during September, the height of hurricane season.
We appreciate the understanding our customers have shown during this situation. Our response time was impacted, temporarily, but we are ready to move forward.
This wasn’t our first rodeo for our Naples crew. We hope the tropics remain calm throughout the duration of hurricane season. But as they say–when you live in Florida, it’s not a matter of if, but when, a hurricane will strike. This was our time.
